SESTAT Variables


All the variables available from the 1993 SESTAT surveys are listed below. The list is organized by subgroup within the broad topic group (EMPLOYMENT (JOB), EDUCATION (ED), or DEMOGRAPHICS (DEM)).


A- Job Status, Employed/Unemployed (e.g., whether looking for work, reasons for not working, full/partime work)

B- Characteristics of Principal Job as of the reference week (e.g., principal occupation, when started this job, job relatedness to the degree, reasons for working outside the degree field)

C- Characteristics of Other Jobs (e.g., last job when not currently working, 2nd job is held during the reference week, job held in 1988, reason for the part-time job)

D- Work History Related Data (e.g., job change reasons, professional association membership, career path job indicator and when started job)

E- Employer Characteristics (e.g., employer location, employer sector, whether employer is an educational institution)

F- Principal Job Activites and Related Data (e.g., licensed or certified, work activities of principal job, management responsibilities, number supervised)

G- Job Training (e.g., type of work related training received, reason for attending training)

H- Job Salary (e.g., salary on the principal job, salary based on full-time indicator)

I- Miscellaneous Job Related Data (e.g., interest in foreign research, support from federal government)

J- First Bachelor's Degree (BA) (e.g., BA degree award year, BA degree field, Grade Point Average, BA school location, sources of financial support)

K- Community College/Associate's Degree (e.g., whether an associate's degree was earned, whether attended community college and reasons for attending)

L- High School (HS) (e.g., year of high school diploma awarded, location of high school)

M- Most Recent Degree (MR) (e.g., degree level of most recent degree earned, date earned, major field of study, sources of financial support, location of school)

N- Other Education (e.g., enrollment in school during the reference week, school attended, degree type, field and date earned, sources of financial support)

O- Highest Degree (HD) (e.g., degree level of the highest degree earned, date earned, major field of study, location of school)

U- Age, Birth, Gender, Race/Ethnicity (e.g., birth date and birth place, gender, race/ethnicity, minority indicator)

V- Citizenship (e.g., country of citizenship, U.S. citizenship status)

W- Family Data (e.g., marital status, spouse's work status and area of specialty, number of children in household, parents' education level)

Z- Survey Administrative Data (e.g., sampling cell, survey year, weighting factor, science and engineering indicator, reference ID)
